meh. Not loving the rational here and frankly the ternary looks awkward. It's also less readable IMHO. The dangling null is irksome. Also I'm not entirely sure that the scenerio presented here is all that likey to happen if at all since the predicate is very rarely an integer. The 80/20 rules applies here and frankly so does a bit of responsibility on the devs part. That's the job.
